Backcourt Fundamentals – 1.0 – Safety Length
The Safety Length is a crucial high shot played from the backcourt. This shot becomes your go-to move when the ball is tight, too fast, or too deep for a proper swing setup.
It is a high defensive shot that not only buys you precious time to return to the T but also significantly complicates your opponent’s attack.
Imagine your opponent is ready on the T, eagerly hunting your next shot. By executing this shot at a slow to medium speed, you disrupt their plans.
The ball, hit high on the front wall and hugging the side wall, bounces deep in the backcourt. Your follow-through brings you back to the T, maintaining control. To reduce errors, the ball’s trajectory should remain below the out line as it travels towards the back of the court.
Mastering the Safety Length involves positioning yourself as much behind the ball as possible. A short, controlled swing from low to high with an open racket face ensures the shot will be played with height.
This shot is not just a skill but an essential weapon for every intermediate player. It allows you to regain the T and can turn the tables, putting pressure back on your opponent. Even if they manage to attack from this shot, you will be in a prime position to retrieve and potentially counterattack.
Learning and perfecting this shot elevates your game, making you a more formidable and resilient player on the court.
Remember the safety length is a high defensive shot that gives you time to regain the T.
